mplex and varied causes of female hair loss over her career as a dermatologic surgeon. She recently spoke to SheFinds.com about whether women can use minoxidil, a hair loss treatment that is more often recommended for men with genetic thinning. While men and women both experience hair loss, the diagnosis and treatment can look quite different for each gender. Female hair loss is more likely due to other than purely genetic causes. For example, hair loss in women can often arise from changes in diet, hormones or medications. If hair loss is genetic, the only proven topical treatment is minoxidil. Serums that contain this compound may be useful, those without it are unlikely to work. And, of course, one can buy minoxidil in the pharmacy without a prescription. “For women, I often recommend using 2-3 droppers (2-3 milliliters) of [minoxidil] to fully coat the entire area of concern. It needs to contact the scalp for 4-6 hours to be effective,” Dr. Shaver said. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), Scalp Micro-Pigmentation and Platelet Rich Plasma are other useful treatments for hair loss in women.
(LLLT) may offer supplementary benefits for hair regrowth, it should not be considered a replacement for FDA-approved treatments like Finasteride or Minoxidil. The long-term efficacy of LLLT remains uncertain, and it is generally regarded as a complementary treatment. Laser Therapy Devices LaserCap The LaserCap is a hermetically sealed, dome-shaped membrane that contains 224 individual 650nm 5mW lasers. The main advantages of this laser are the large number of diodes and the fact that it is portable, allowing the person to do normal activities during treatment. The user can perform most routine daily activities when using this device. The LaserCap fits inside most hats and is powered by a small belt-clip battery pack, making it easily portable. The user can perform almost any activity during use of the device. » HairMax LaserComb The HairMax LaserComb, cleared by the FDA as a Class II medical device in January 2007, is a compact version of the larger laser therapy units used by hair clinics in other countries to stimulate hair to increase in thickness and make the hair appear fuller. This home product has teeth that part the hair to potentially enable the laser light to reach the scalp in areas of existing…
wait until a person is 25 before considering surgical hair restoration. With the availability of effective medications for hair loss (finasteride and minoxidil) delaying surgery has become somewhat easier, since, in addition to growing or maintaining hair, they can be used to temporize the patient until hair transplantation is indicated. Barring untoward reactions, finasteride should always be used at least one year before judging its effectiveness. The patient should be warned that during the first 6 months, hair loss may be accelerated from these medications. There are several important reasons not to perform surgery when a person is too young. First, the extent and rate of hair loss is more difficult to predict. Second, as discussed above, a diagnosis of DUPA may be missed. Third, the younger patient commonly wants his adolescent hairline and density restored. Restoring the hairline to its original position will look unnatural as the patient ages. Restoring a patient's original density, of course, is not a realistic goal of a hair transplant, which services only to redistribute existing hair. By the time a patient reaches his mid-20's he is more likely to be forward-looking and have expectations that can be satisfied with surgery. Hair and Scalp…
Q: I have read on numerous websites that Propecia and Minoxidil work synergistically, and that a hair loss sufferer will see better results using them together than either one alone. Do you believe this is the case, or do you think Propecia is enough treatment by itself for someone who just began to experience slight hair thinning and is too early for hair transplantation? -- K.V., Hewlett Bay Park, New York
Q: I am 26 years old and have been suffering from hair loss for 8 years. I have been on Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil) during those years. Unfortunately my hair loss has continued to progress aggressively. I am of half African and Caucasian descent, and my hair is curly. I understand that there are certain limitations on having hair transplants before you are 35, however I do not mind having another transplant in a few years, if necessary. -- A.L., Rye, N.Y.
