Q: My query is prompted by your answer to another query "Is Avodart Safe?" My son, who is in his mid-20s, has been taking Dutasteride for hair loss for about two years now. He had tried Finasteride earlier but without much benefit. Medical supervision regarding Dutasteride is not available in Australia as the drug has not been released here yet. -- N.V., Melbourne, Australia I am concerned by your remarks that there is no biologic model to show the long-term safety of Dutasteride (as opposed to Finasteride). Would you suggest that he goes back to taking Finasteride? We would be grateful for your advice. A: It is a tough call as I have never met or examined your son, so I can only offer an opinion based on limited information. If you feel your son will be emotionally or socially debilitated by the hair loss, then I think that it may be worth the risk (if there is any) of taking the medication; otherwise, I would use Finasteride. Please keep in mind that you don't need to make the final decision now. You may want to defer the decision until he is 28 or so, at time when he is…
Q: I am suffering from Pseudopelade for four years now. I have lost a lot of hair & there are big bald patches on the top of my scalp that are difficult to hide. Is there any hair transplant surgery or follicle transplant surgery possible in my case, or anything else I can do? -- T.L., Boston, MA A: In general, hair transplantation does not work for Pseudopelade (a localized area of scarring hair loss on the top of the scalp) since the condition is recipient dominant rather than donor dominant. With a donor dominant condition, such as androgenetic hair loss, the tendency to have the condition, or be resistant to it, is located in the hair follicle and moves with the hair follicle when the follicle is transplanted to a new area...

Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is very common in adult men. It is caused by genetic traits that are passed down through a person’s inherited DNA. The genes can come from either parent. Depending on the age of the patient and the stage of his hair loss, the baldness can typically be classified in one of twelve classes of patterned hair loss described in the Norwood Classification. In women, the diagnosis of hair loss is more complex, as the most common presentation of balding, a diffuse pattern, can have a variety of non-androgenetic causes. These may include pregnancy, gynecologic problems, birth control pills, and thyroid disease. Because underlying medical conditions can produce hair loss that closely mimics the diffuse pattern seen in genetic hair loss, a careful diagnostic evaluation by a doctor is particularly important for female patients.
Most people who are losing their hair are losing it simply because they have inherited a genetic design that pre-disposes them for baldness. Hair loss can also be caused by underlying medical problems, drugs, infections and a variety of other factors. Medical problems that can cause diffuse hair loss include: anemia, thyroid disease, connective tissue […]

The FDA approval of oral finasteride, in the form of Propecia, has been a major breakthrough in the medical management of male pattern baldness. Before Propecia, the only medically proven treatment was topical minoxidil (Rogaine) and this medication was only minimally effective and, for many, a nuisance to apply. Propecia, on the other hand, is […]
