Is it Possible to Lose Hair Transplant Grafts Without Bleeding?

April 5th, 2007

Q: Five days after my hair transplant I shampooed, rubbing the transplanted area vigorously using my finger tips and all the scabs fell off. Is it possible I have dislodged some of the grafts even though they didn’t bleed? If there was no bleeding, is it enough to assume all the new transplanted follicles stayed in place??

A: At five days after a hair transplant the grafts are pretty secure, but still can be dislodged.

However, if there was no bleeding, it is unlikely that you lost any grafts.

I have a client wants a hair transplant I was looking at him for a doctor with experience in this area and I ask your help Thanks

Dr. Bernstein: I would be happy to see him in consultation. He can schedule by calling our office 212-826-6200. If he doesn’t mind, you are welcome to join him.

14 days after my surgery my scabs are pretty much gone. I notice that my scalp seemed to be a little sore on certain parts of the transplanted scalp after my hair cut on day 12. On day 15, I was washing my hair. The water was a little hot, when i pulled my hair out the running, i noticed a little bleeding on front of my hair. Did I lose a follicle after 14 days?

Dr. Bernstein: After 10 days, the grafts are permanent. The bleeding may have represented an ingrown hair breaking through the skin. It is nothing to be concerned about.

1 month after my surgery I massaged my head by squeezing the scalp gently. Now I notice several pimples in red and a few follicles with blood oozing out. Bleeding stopped immediately upon stopping the massage, but I am concerned if I’ve done any damage to those grafts and others showing red pimples… Please help.

Dr. Bernstein: One month after the procedure the grafts are permanent, so you don’t need to worry. The pimples were most likely caused by early hair growth trying to push through the skin if the pore had closed off.
