We are pleased to offer three types of consultations: In-office Consultation: An appointment with a physician in our physical office. This is preferred because it allows your physician to examine you and make specific recommendations regarding medication and surgery. Virtual Consultation: A video visit with a physician. (A fee applies.) This is available to new […]
In Part 1 of our two-video series on Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), Dr. Bernstein is seen in consultation with a patient in preparation of his hair transplant procedure. In FUT, follicular unit grafts are harvested from the back and sides of the scalp through a long, thin donor strip. Dr. Bernstein reviews with the patient the target number of grafts to be harvested and how he arrived at that number. Next, he goes over the aesthetic plan for the transplant and how the patient will be able to groom his hair when the transplant has matured. Sedatives are administered and the patient’s vital signs and blood oxygen are recorded.
Q: Why is the consult fee more for diffuse thinning than for a regular visit? -- B.F., Altherton, CA A: Diffuse hair loss, more common in women, can be the result of a number of underlying medical conditions and therefore it usually requires an extended medical evaluation. If you are a male or female with obvious diffuse thinning from androgenetic alopecia (common baldness), or if you have patterned hair loss where the diagnosis is straightforward, the fee is less because an extensive evaluation is not required. Q: Didn’t you do free consults in the past? -- N.F., Bronxville, NY A: Yes. It had been in response to the policy of the larger chains. Patients coming to our practice are evaluated by a board certified dermatologist, trained in diagnosing the causes of your hair loss with expertise in both medical and surgical management. Our consults are not just screens for surgery. Read more information on becoming a new patient on the Bernstein Medical - Center for Hair Restoration website. Q: I am a 34 year old male and my dermatologist prescribed Propecia for me today. Most of my hair loss is at the hairline, but there is some loss on top as well. It's not bad, I just want to stay ahead of it. If I get a transplant I want to get it at your clinic, but I will give the Propecia a try first. I am going to be overseas for a couple of months starting this Sunday and I was wondering about the necessity or desirability of having someone measure my hair density prior to starting the Propecia. Would you advise waiting to start the Propecia until I come back in two months and having my density examined at your clinic? -- M.R., Great Falls, Virginia A: I would start Propecia as soon as possible. What is important for a hair transplant is the density in the donor area and this is not affected by Propecia (or minoxidil). Your donor density can be measured anytime at an evaluation prior to surgery. If you want to wait to see the effects of Propecia prior to the hair transplant, you really should wait a year; since growth, if…

Hair transplant surgery is a procedure in which hair is moved from the back and/or sides of the scalp, where the hair is permanent (donor area), to areas that are thinning or bald on the front, top, or crown of the scalp (recipient area). Once transplanted, the hair will continue to grow for a person’s lifetime. It is the aesthetic arrangement of these individual follicular unit grafts that enables the surgeon to create the most natural results possible from a hair restoration procedure.
