December 27th, 2017: Hair Transplant Repair

Many hair transplant surgeries at Bernstein Medical are performed to correct the appearance of poorly performed hair transplants usually resulting from outdated methods such as “hair plugs,” mini grafts, or scalp reductions. Some surgeries correct hair transplants that weren’t properly planned out or ones that were done on patients who were not appropriate candidates for surgery. Advances in hair transplantation, influenced greatly by founder of Bernstein Medical, Dr. Robert M. Bernstein, have led to correction of unnatural-looking hair transplants. Dr. Bernstein’s dual-publication “The Art of Repair in Surgical Hair Restoration” (Part 1 and Part 2) lays the groundwork for hair transplant repair to this day.

There are many techniques in hair transplant repair. Camouflage is an older technique where, in order to hide the larger grafts or improve the look of the hairline, small follicular units, or micro-grafts, are placed directly in front of the larger grafts to hide them. At one time, it was felt that most of the old plug or mini-micro-grafting hair transplant procedures could be corrected by simply using camouflage techniques to hide the unnatural looking grafts. This method does not work if the larger grafts are too close to the frontal hairline, if they are located in the crown, or are simply pointing in the wrong direction. Camouflage also cannot correct hair lines that have been transplanted too low on the forehead so plug removal (or graft excision), was implemented to carefully remove the unnatural-looking grafts. These grafts were excised and dissected into individual follicular units, and then re-implanted in their proper location and direction and the areas where the larger grafts had been removed are sutured closed. This way, the hair used in the outdated procedure is reused and the overall appearance of the skin in that area is improved because the underlying scarred tissue is removed as well.

Widened scars can also be made less noticeable with Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure, hair transplant procedure when hair is extracted directly from the back and sides of the scalp and placed in the area of the scar to make it less noticeable. Many of the hair transplant repairs we perform at Bernstein Medical are fixing scars.
