January 10th, 2018: FUT vs FUE hair transplant procedures

We are often asked about the differences between the two main types of hair restoration procedures, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). In this week’s live video, Dr. Wolfeld discusses these two procedures and their indications. In a FUT hair transplant, also known as a strip procedure, a long, thin strip of skin is removed from the donor area in the back and sides of the scalp. Individual follicular units are then removed from the donor strip using stereo-microscopic dissection. In Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), follicular units are harvested, one at a time, over a larger area of the donor zone. FUE must be performed using an instrument and uses either a hand-held device or robotically with the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant System. Bernstein Medical has used the ARTAS robot since 2011, and today, all FUE hair transplants at Bernstein Medical use the latest version of the robot, the ARTAS 9x. The ARTAS robot’s use of precision optics and computer algorithms enable it to extract follicular units with a consistency that cannot be matched by the human hand. This helps achieve better results than that accomplished by manual devices.

Both FUT and FUE procedures are great treatment options, but they have different indications for use. The main advantage of FUT is a larger yield of donor hair relative to FUE. This enables greater fullness in the outcome of the transplant. However, the FUT/strip procedure leaves a linear scar in the donor area, making it a better procedure for patients who wear their hair longer. The main advantage of FUE is that there is no linear scar in the donor area, so the patient is able to wear his hair very short. It is also a great treatment option for those with widened scars from previous transplants or if a patients’ scalp laxity (looseness) is insufficient for a FUT to be performed. Choosing what procedure is right for you is one of the most important aspects of the hair restoration process, and all options, including medication, should be discussed with a physician in consultation.
