Video: Dr. Bernstein Interviewed about Hair Loss on CBS’s The Early Show

Julie Chen, known for her reporting from Kuwait and Qatar at the start of the Iraq war, and for anchoring the highly rated CBS television program “The Early Show” invited Robert M. Bernstein M.D. to her three-part series on women and hair loss. In this much talked about exploration, Dr. Bernstein helped the audience better understand current hair loss treatment options.

Female Hair Loss Patient treated with Hair TransplantIn “Medical Ways To Cut Hair Loss”, part two of The Early Show’s three-part examination of the causes and treatment of women’s hair loss, Dr. Bernstein was asked to outline treatments used to fight balding for both men and women. He discussed several of the new ways that science is addressing the problems associated with hair loss. The pros and cons of using prescription medicines, as well as surgical hair transplantation, were carefully explained.

Dr. Bernstein summarized the latest drug therapies used to slow down, or prevent, the development of hereditary baldness. “Success with medicine is really dependent upon the cause of the baldness. Cortisone and Anthralin, for example, can play a helpful role in restoring hair that was lost due to dermatologic conditions. Propecia and Minoxidil are effective in early patterned alopecia. We find however, that the extensive hair loss associated with advanced genetic balding does not respond as well to medicine.”

The Early Show was especially interested to hear what Dr. Bernstein, a hair transplant surgeon in New York, had to say about surgical options. The episode examined the most effective surgical procedure for hair loss; Follicular Unit Transplantation, also referred to as “FUT.” Pioneered by Dr. Bernstein in the mid 1990s, this procedure has continued to evolve and is the hair transplant technique now considered by physicians to be the state-of-the-art. In this procedure, hair is transplanted from a permanent donor zone in the back and sides of the scalp into areas that are thinning due to hereditary baldness. The transplanted hairs are moved as individual follicular units, the way they grow naturally.

The segment also profiled an actual hair transplant patient of Dr. Bernstein, allowing viewers to see firsthand the exciting transformation that took place for a woman who was emotionally devastated by her quickly receding hairline.

Towards the end of the show, viewers were cautioned by Dr. Bernstein to do careful research before committing to hair restoration surgery: “If you think you are a candidate for a surgical procedure, I recommend that you consult with a board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic or plastic surgeon, and check local and state medical boards for any record of patient complaints before choosing a doctor.”
