Dr. Sejal Shah, an associate physician at Bernstein Medical – Center for Hair Restoration, was featured on the Dr. Oz Show where she discussed the latest treatments for women with thinning hair. Among the treatments they discussed were at-home laser therapy devices, Minoxidil 5% for Women, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. The show also featured Dr. Michael Wolfeld of Bernstein Medical applying PRP treatments to a patient in our state-of-the-art facility in New York City. The PRP patient exhibited the results of her treatment, and the crowd responded to the significant improvement in her hair compared to the ‘before’ photos.
Dr. Oz introduced Dr. Shah as three participants sat on the stage, each with different at-home laser therapy devices atop their heads: the HairMax LaserComb, HairMax LaserBand, and the baseball cap-like Capillus82. Dr. Shah discussed the safety and significance of the home-use laser therapy devices:
These devices are safe. They’ve been cleared by the FDA. We’ve had laser treatment for hair growth for many years, but what’s new is that we now have home devices, and that’s the breakthrough, you can do these treatments in the comfort of your own home.
Dr. Shah discussed the differences between the devices, including the number of laser diodes, the type of hair loss best suited for each device, and the length of each treatment session. All the devices use the principle of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to treat hair loss. In LLLT, the scalp is irradiated with low-intensity laser light which is thought to increase cellular energy production to halt miniaturization of hair follicles and promote hair regrowth.
Following the talk about laser therapy, Dr. Oz noted that Minoxidil 5% has been approved by the FDA for use in women. Dr. Shah mentioned that the topical medication has been recommended by physicians for years for use off-label, but that approval by the FDA means that now we know for certain that it is safe. Both Dr. Shah and Dr. Oz called Minoxidil the “gold standard” for thinning hair.
Next, Dr. Oz discussed Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss, how it works, and how the PRP is derived from the patient’s blood then injected into balding areas of the scalp. They showed a video of Dr. Wolfeld injecting PRP into a patient at Bernstein Medical – Center for Hair Restoration and then brought out the patient, named Faye, to discuss the treatment. Dr. Oz showed a ‘before’ image of Faye’s hairline and the top of her scalp and put the photos side-by-side with a shot of her on the stage. The apparent improvement in her hair growth compared to the ‘before’ photo elicited an audible gasp from the crowd. When asked about her thoughts on the results of five months of PRP treatment, she stated to a round of applause, simply, “I’m just ecstatic.” She said, “I washed my hair on Wednesday, got the comb through it, hardly any hair came out. I was ecstatic. I was in tears. I was just so happy. And this is the first I’ve had my hair down in maybe three years!”
Faye had an extra surprise for Dr. Oz and viewers of the show:
Faye: And I found the doctor on your show!
Dr. Oz: Oh you did?!
Faye: Yes, Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Shah. On your show!
Dr. Oz: They’re wonderful physicians and I do trust them with my friends as well. Bless you. I’m very happy for you.
We are very happy for her as well, as we are for all of our patients whose lives have been improved by our hair restoration procedures.
