Q: What is the fee for consultations?
A: There are two types of consultations at Bernstein Medical Center for Hair Restoration:
Consultation for Patterned Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)
The doctor will perform a diagnostic evaluation of your hair loss and will recommend medical therapy and/or surgical hair restoration. The evaluation will include assessment of density and miniaturization, discussion of your Norwood Class (in men) or Ludwig Class (in women) and the various therapeutic options available to you. When appropriate lab tests and/or biopsies will be performed.
The fee for this physician evaluation is $150. If a biopsy or other testing is needed, there will be an additional charge. Payment is expected at the time of your visit. If lab tests are performed, you will receive a separate bill from the lab. We do not accept medical insurance; however, our staff will provide you with a form that you can submit to your insurance carrier.
Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations for Diffuse Hair Loss
The doctor performs diagnostic evaluations for patients with diffuse hair loss (generalized thinning), a condition most often seen in women. This comprehensive diagnostic evaluation includes a detailed history, microscopic hair analysis, telogen/anagen ratios, densitometry for miniaturization, and lab tests and/or a biopsy when appropriate.
The fee for this evaluation is $275. If a biopsy is needed, there will be an additional charge. Payment is expected at the time of your visit. You will receive a separate bill for lab tests that will be sent to you directly from the lab. We do not accept medical insurance; however, our staff will provide you with a form that you can submit to your insurance carrier.
Eyebrow/Eyelash Consultation
The doctor performs evaluations for patients regarding thinning eyebrows or eyelashes. The evaluation includes an assessment and evaluation of candidacy for surgical eyebrow restoration (including assessment of the stability of the donor area), as well as non-surgical treatments such as Latisse (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution). The fee for this consultation is $150.

Q: If I have a hair transplant procedure will Dr. Bernstein be my surgeon?
A: Yes. Dr. Bernstein performs all of the hair transplants and repair work at our NYC hair transplant surgery facility.
Q: Is there a limit as to how many consultations I may have?
A: There is no limit as to the number of consultations a patient can have. A full understanding of the surgical hair restoration process is critical to your ability to make decisions that are right for you. You may return to our New York office as often as you need to, in order to have all of your questions answered.
Q: If I have a consultation at a Bernstein Medical Open House, do I have to return for a private consultation with the doctor?
A: For surgical planning, it is not necessary for the doctor to re-examine you once you have been evaluated during the open house. However, if you have additional questions about your evaluation or any aspect of the procedure, a private follow-up consultation should be scheduled by calling us at 212-826-2400.
Q: Who performs the consultations at your Manhattan hair restoration center?
A: All of our hair transplant consultations are done personally by Dr. Bernstein. We do not have a “sales staff” or “consultants”. You can arrange for a consultation with Dr. Bernstein by calling us at 212-826-2400 or by filling out our Physician Consult form.

Q: What can I expect the day of the hair replacement procedure?
A: Depending on the type of hair restoration surgery you will be having (i.e. hair replacement or corrective surgery) your visit can take from several hours to a full day. During this time, you may be given sedatives by mouth in addition to local anesthesia. As a result, you may want to doze through some of your procedure. We will provide you with lunch and snacks. We will encourage you to drink a lot of fluids. We have a video library, so you can choose to watch movies during the course of the day or watch TV if you choose. Perhaps you would rather listen to music – just let us know. We will make every effort to keep you comfortable and relaxed.
Q: What if I don’t live near your NYC hair transplant center?
A: If you are unable to travel to our New York City hair transplant office for a consultation, we invite you to fill out our online photo consultation form or mail your photos to us to the following address: 110 E. 55th Street New York, NY 10022. Dr. Bernstein prefers a front, side and top view. A Bernstein Medical staff member will contact you to schedule your personal telephone-photo consultation with Dr. Bernstein. The doctor will then assess your potential candidacy for a surgical hair restoration or a repair procedure.
Q: Can I schedule hair transplant surgery directly after a photo consult?
A: We ask that patients who schedule hair replacement or corrective work via phone-photo consultation make an appointment to see Dr. Bernstein one to two days prior to the scheduled date of the procedure. This will allow the doctor to do a more precise assessment of the number of grafts to transplant or, with corrective hair transplants, to determine the extent of the repair work necessary.

Q: If I am having a Hair Restoration surgery in NY where should I stay?
A: If you are having a hair transplant surgery with us, there is a list of hotels which are close to our New York facility located at http://www.bernsteinmedical.com/ny_hotels.php
Q: How can I meet with previous patients to see results of the procedure?
A: Yes, we give Open Houses at our New York and New Jersey facilities specifically for this purpose. During these events, you can meet patients of Bernstein Medical who have had hair restoration surgery, and view a live hair transplant procedure in progress. At these events, you may also have a Hair Densitometer reading and receive an initial open forum consultation with Dr. Bernstein to assess your candidacy for a hair replacement procedure.
Q: How long does a consultation last?
A: Your consultation with Dr. Bernstein in the NYC hair transplant center will be scheduled to last one half hour. We advise patients who are coming in for the first time to arrive at least 15 minutes before their actual appointment so that there will be time to complete medical history paperwork as well as a general information form and review a HIPAA privacy statement. In addition, due to the nature of our practice, some patients may require more than the scheduled half hour. Since hair transplantation is an elective procedure, we try to accommodate all questions and concerns at the time of the initial consultation. You can contact our offices for dates, times, and locations by calling the local number for our Manhattan hair restoration center: 212-826-2400.
Q: How soon can I book a hair transplant or repair procedure?
A: Availability of surgical dates is determined, in part, by the size and type of your procedure. Availability generally ranges from two weeks to two months in the New York City hair transplant center.

Q: What type of information should I bring to the consultation?
A: If you have the results of a medical evaluation for hair loss or related blood work, please bring that information with you.
Q: Are lab tests required prior to hair transplant surgery?
A: Yes, we require a screen for Hepatitis B and C, HIV and a CBC (blood count). You can have your blood drawn at our Fort Lee facility at 2150 Center Avenue or at the lab of your choice. We will provide you with a requisition slip. The form will instruct the facility to fax us the results.
Q: Do you accept insurance in the Manhattan hair replacement center?
A: No, we do not accept insurance for hair transplants performed in New York as these are cosmetic and generally non-reimbursable.
Q: Can hair restoration surgery be submitted for insurance reimbursement?
A: In general, hair transplant procedures are considered cosmetic in nature and are not reimbursable. If the hair replacement or corrective surgery is due to an injury or medical condition, then it may be. We would be happy to supply you with an operative report in these situations. Because the regulations in New York may be different from other states, it would be worthwhile for you to contact your individual carrier.
Q: If I do not receive the exact number of grafts that I was scheduled for will I get a refund?
A: Yes. You will only pay for what you receive during your hair transplant or corrective work. If your final number of grafts falls short of the scheduled amount; a refund will be issued.
Q: Do I have to pay a cosmetic surgery tax if I have my procedure done in New York?
A: Currently, there is no cosmetic surgery tax for a hair transplant in New York.

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

Q: What do I do next?
A: Call our New York City office at 212-826-2400 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Bernstein or to receive more information regarding surgical hair restoration or repair procedures.
