Q: What is in this section?
A: You will find answers to commonly asked questions about our facility at 2150 Center Avenue, Fort Lee, NJ, regarding the services of Bernstein Medical. This section concerns administrative issues (questions about hair transplant surgery and corrective work, are addressed in other sections of the site). You may also call us at our New Jersey office at 201-585-1115.

Q: What is the fee for consultations?
A: There are two types of consultations at Bernstein Medical Center for Hair Restoration:
Consultation for Patterned Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)
The doctor will perform a diagnostic evaluation of your hair loss and will recommend medical therapy and/or surgical hair restoration. The evaluation will include assessment of density and miniaturization, discussion of your Norwood Class (in men) or Ludwig Class (in women) and the various therapeutic options available to you. When appropriate lab tests and/or biopsies will be performed.

The fee for this physician evaluation is $150. If a biopsy or other testing is needed, there will be an additional charge. Payment is expected at the time of your visit. If lab tests are performed, you will receive a separate bill from the lab. We do not accept medical insurance; however, our staff will provide you with a form that you can submit to your insurance carrier.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations for Diffuse Hair Loss
The doctor performs diagnostic evaluations for patients with diffuse hair loss (generalized thinning), a condition most often seen in women. This comprehensive diagnostic evaluation includes a detailed history, microscopic hair analysis, telogen/anagen ratios, densitometry for miniaturization, and lab tests and/or a biopsy when appropriate.

The fee for this evaluation is $375. If a biopsy is needed, there will be an additional charge. Payment is expected at the time of your visit. You will receive a separate bill for lab tests that will be sent to you directly from the lab. We do not accept medical insurance; however, our staff will provide you with a form that you can submit to your insurance carrier.

Q: If I have hair restoration surgery at Bernstein Medical, will Dr. Bernstein be my hair transplant surgeon?
A: Yes. Dr. Bernstein performs all of the hair transplants and corrective work at Bernstein Medical.

Q: How many consultations may I have before deciding to proceed with hair transplantation surgery?
A: There is no limit as to the number of consultations a patient can have. A full understanding of the hair restoration process is critical to your ability to make decisions that are right for you. You may return to our NJ hair transplant office as often as necessary in order to have all of your questions answered.

Q: If I have a consultation with Dr. Bernstein at an Open House, do I have to come back for a private consultation?
A: It is not necessary for the hair transplant doctor to re-examine you once you have been evaluated during the open house. However, if you have additional questions about your evaluation or any aspect of the hair replacement surgery, a private follow-up consultation should be scheduled at our New Jersey facility by calling 212-826-2400.

Q: Who performs the hair transplant consultations?
A: All of our hair restoration consultations are done by Dr. Bernstein, personally. We do not have a “sales staff” or “consultants”. You can arrange for a consultation with Dr. Bernstein in the New Jersey hair replacement facility by calling 201-585-1115 or click Physician Consult.

Q: What if I don’t live near your New Jersey hair replacement office?
A: If you are unable to travel to our Fort Lee office for a consultation, we invite you to fill out our online photo consultation form or mail your photos to us to the following address: 2150 Center Avenue, Fort Lee, NJ 07024. Dr. Bernstein prefers front, side and top views. A Bernstein Medical staff member will contact you to schedule your personal telephone-photo consultation with Dr. Bernstein. The hair transplant doctor will then assess your potential candidacy for a transplantation or repair procedure.

Q: What do I do once the doctor has assessed my photos and potential candidacy for hair restoration or repair work?
A: We ask that patients who schedule hair replacement or corrective work via phone-photo consultation make an appointment 1-2 days prior to the scheduled date of the procedure. This will allow the hair transplant surgeon to do a more precise assessment of the number of Follicular Unit Grafts to transplant or, with repairs, determine the extent of the corrective work necessary.

Q: If I am having a hair transplant surgery at Bernstein Medical where should I stay?
A: If you are having a hair transplant surgery in our New York facility, there is a list of hotels which are close to our offices at http://www.bernsteinmedical.com/ny_hotels.php.

Q: May I see the results of actual New Jersey hair transplantation patients?
A: Yes, they can be seen at the Open Houses we often have at Bernstein Medical. During these events, you can meet patients of Bernstein Medical who have had a hair transplant and view a live procedure in progress. At these events, you may also have a density reading and receive an initial open forum consultation with Dr. Bernstein to assess your candidacy for hair replacement surgery.

Q: How much time does a consultation with Dr. Bernstein take?
A: Your consultation with Dr. Bernstein in the New Jersey office will be scheduled to last one half hour. We advise patients who are coming in for the first time to arrive at least 15 minutes before their actual appointment so that there will be time to complete medical history paperwork as well as a general information form and review a HIPAA privacy statement. In addition, due to the nature of our practice, some patients may require more than the scheduled half hour. Since surgical hair restoration is an elective procedure, we try to accommodate all questions and concerns at the time of the initial consultation. You can contact our offices for dates, times, and locations by calling the local number for the Fort Lee office: 201-585-1115.

Q: If I come for a consultation, how soon before I can book a corrective procedure or hair transplantation in New Jersey?
A: Availability of surgical dates is determined, in part, by the size and type of your procedure. Availability generally ranges from two weeks to two months in the New Jersey hair transplant facility.

Q: Are there any lab tests needed prior to the procedure?
A: Yes, we require a screen for Hepatitis B and C, HIV and a CBC (blood count). You can have your blood drawn at our Fort Lee facility at 2150 Center Avenue or at the lab of your choice. We will provide you with a requisition slip. The form will instruct the facility to fax us the results.

Q: What can I expect the day of the hair restoration surgery?
A: Depending on the type of procedure you will be having, i.e. hair replacement or corrective surgery your visit can take from several hours to a full day. During this time, you may be given sedatives by mouth in addition to local anesthesia. As a result, you may want to doze through some of your hair transplantation procedure. We will provide you with lunch and snacks. We will encourage you to drink a lot of fluids. We have a video library, so you can choose to watch movies during the course of the day or watch TV if you choose. Perhaps you would rather listen to music – just let us know. We will make every effort to keep you comfortable and relaxed.

Q: Do I have to bring anything for the consultation?
A: We do not require that first-time patients bring anything with them to the consultation. However, if you have the results of a medical evaluation for hair loss or related blood work, please bring that information with you.

Q: Do you accept medical insurance in the New Jersey hair transplant facility?
A: No we do not accept insurance for hair transplantation in our New Jersey office.

Q: Can these procedures be submitted for insurance reimbursement?
A: In general, hair transplant surgery is considered cosmetic in nature and is not reimbursable. If the hair replacement or corrective surgery is due to an injury or medical condition, then it may be. We would be happy to supply you with an operative report in these situations. Because the regulations in New Jersey may be different from other states, it would be worthwhile for you to contact your individual carrier.

Q: Will I get a refund if I do not receive the exact number of grafts that Dr. Bernstein estimated?
A: Yes. You will only pay for what you receive during your hair transplant or corrective work. If your final number of grafts falls short of the scheduled amount; a refund will be issued.

Q: Does New Jersey have a cosmetic surgery tax?
A: In the state of New Jersey, all patients who have cosmetic surgery, including surgical hair restoration, must pay a 7% cosmetic surgery tax on their procedure.

Q: What is your policy regarding cancellations?
A: We ask that if you cannot keep your scheduled appointment for your hair transplant that you contact the New Jersey office two weeks prior to your scheduled procedure date. If you fail to give us advanced notice of a cancellation, you may lose your deposit.

Q: What is my next step?
A: You may call our office at 201-585-1115 to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Bernstein or to receive more information regarding hair transplantation surgery or corrective work.
